Foods for diseases of the digestion tract

"The spleen is the root of all aquired diseases" goes the saying, such emphsizing that the quality of the food intake is essential for all inner organs. If stomach and spleen loose their normal functions, symptoms like bad digestion, stomach pain, blown up belly, diarrhea, constipation, etc. are likely to follow.

1. Chronic gastritis

The patient should eat appropriate, easy digestable foods, containing B-Vitamins, iron and proteins. Eating fine, soft foods that are neither too hot, nor too cold should be eaten in reasonable, t.i. not too much or few amounts. Most important are grains, flour corn as sautte and porridge, but also bean products, vegetables, fresh fruits, pig liver and eggs etc.are good for refreshing the blood. If there is a lack of stomach acid the patient can try with fresh milk or sweet and sour meats, bean products, vegetables, sour fruits to improve this. Forbidden are smoking, strong tea, hot, spicy food, rosted and broiled, sultry food with hard consistence and cold or cool character.

Practical hint:

The so-called stomach diseases in general (Including gastritis, ulcer, gastric

phtosis) can all be influenced well by the pig stomach treatment:

Take a pig stomach and stuff it with 1 liang fennel seeds, half liang fresh ginger

put it into a casserole, add water, cook it on a low fire, drain the surflous water

and add spices to it, cut it into suitable portions, and take care to chew it well

and swallow it slowly.

2. Chronic enteritis:

For patients with chronic enteritis, incl. chr. bacterial enteritis, chron. bacterial dysentery and tuberculosis of the alimentary canal, nervous enteritis etc. it is helpful to eat light, rather bland, soft and fine food, which is easy to digest. The foods chosen should be able to balance the spleen system and of a astringent character to stop diarrhea, such as lilly bulbs, lotos and euryalis seeds, Indian bread (pachyma cocos, poria), string beans (lentils), almond powder etc. to make a congee from it or a steamed flour cake from it. But it is often rather dangerous to add fresh garlic, sweet-sour garlic and similar things to it. Hot, spicy and strong spices are also forbidden.

Practical hint:

Patients with chron. enteritis often suffer easily from diarrhea. For such cases it

has proved to be very useful to cooked fine sliced apples (seeds removed) into a

soft congee and eat it often.

3. Constipation:

With increasing years the qi and the blood become rather vacuous, the stool becomes dry and consists of hard, single bits. In this situation it the best to eatmore fibrous foods, to promote the bowel movement, like i.e. fresh green vegetables, celery, etc. which contain a lot of fibers, as well as coarse food grain (maize, sorghum, millet, etc.), brown, unpolished rice, beans and its products. If necessary a little of such bowel movement irritating food like onions, soybeans, turnip and sugarcane can be added. Another way is to drink every day in the early morning a cup of salty water to increase the bowel volume, which also prevents constipation. Besides those honey and cassia tora seed (Cao que ming) also moisten the stool and promote defecation. On the other hand chili, strong tea, coffee, alcohol, all hot and spicy foods are not suitable to be eaten.

Practical hint:

Constipation: Eat twice daily (morning and evening) on empty stomach 1-2

kakifruits or kakicakes, furthermore a tea-color dark decoct of 3-4 qian cassia

tora seeds is very effective, but eating hot, irritating food at this time is

4. Cholecystitis (Gallbladder inflammation), cholecystolithiasis (Gall stones)

The two above mentioned diseases occur, because of a stasis of gall secrete, which leads to a stagnation of the fat digestion. Hence the food has to be selected according to its fat content. Suitable food consists of light, blatant, not greasy dishes, like green vegetables, turnip, leguminous veget., fresh fruits etc. Turnip stimulates the bile; it can be eaten fresh or cooked as a vegetable dish. A decoct of fresh boxthorn (fruct.crategi/shan zha) tea dark cooked, is helpful for the fat digestion and absorption.

Gizzard skin powder (ji zhun pi jiu fen ) is also good for digestion and moreover can dissolve stones. Yet every patient must strictly control his fat intake, food with a high cholesterol level is taboo. Greasy food must be avoided, especially if deep fried in oil. A little vegetable oil can be used, but not irritating or thick-rich sauces or foods that cause abdominal distention (winds). Instead the foods should be easily digestible, light and not too strong or spicy in taste. Furthermore all high-cholesterol food like liver, brain, kidneys and fish eggs must be controlled.

Practical hint:

In case of Cholecystitis and cholecystolithiasis occurring combined with

constipation a decoct of daily 6 qian-1 liang cassia seed can be prepared and

drunk often, to improve urine and stool secretion and reduce a high cholesterol

5. Liver diseases

The organ systems of liver and spleen are closely connected. In the clinical experience we often find that patient with liver diseases suffer from abdominal distention, poor appetite, and an "vacuous spleen" symptom. Therefore a correct diet is also one of the measures to take.

When the liver is already ill, the patient must even more improve his whole body's nutrition. For this, the major point is to eat many high proteins, vitamins and food with a hot character. The food should consist of plentiful of sorts and variation, skillfully prepared in order to satisfy the patients appetite.

Fish and vegetables must be fresh; white-bleached and food with artificial color or taste are all harmful to the liver, since when the liver is ill, its ability to transform unnatural chemical substances is reduced. So if the patient eats such rather harmful products, the damage of the liver will become worse. Patients with liver diseases also do better to avoid food with added preservatives. Alcohol is poison for them, and hot, spicy and irritating food does also no good. If abdominal distention or ascites (abdominal edema) occurs, one should better food and beverage with a low salt level.

Points to pay attention to:

A. About the emotional influence:

The mind should be kept calm, the spirit in relaxed mood to achieve the best

results of treatment.

B. About food and beverages

I. Both should be consumed in a reasonable manner: Never stuff

yourself too full or indulge in excessive drinking.

II. Don't eat food that contains too much oil or sugar.

III. Even more unsuitable are hot, spicy and irritating things like

chili, coffee, strong tea etc.
